Knives

Some forty years ago I got my first puukko knife. It was (and still is) a small J. Marttiini Lynx (Ilves) knife or at least it looked like mini Lynx. Even before my own knife, I had tried some other knives just to learn basic carving skills. My godfather as well as my Mother’s cousin were the main teachers with knife skills. I made those small boats (Kaarnalaiva in Finnish) from pine tree bark and added sail from birch tree bark. I remember a wooden classic Mora from grandma’s kitchen as well as a small clip-point knife from home.

During the years I have bought new knives and also started to study more about different steels and grinds. Currently, I have knives from J. Marttiini, Iisakki Järvenpää, Buck Knives, Ka-Bar, Kizlyar, Victorinox, Mora, Gerber, Cold Steel etc. Here I will present some of those and maybe write even some reviews.

The collection

Marttiini Naava

Collector’s knife for the year 2022. Naava is a pretty knife with subtle green color mixed with light-colored curly birch as well as veg. tanned leather. The handle is made of curly birch but it has two green spacers in it. Sheat is sewn with green thread that supports the theme beautifully. Word “naava” means […]

Marttiini Ranger (Current)

This one is identical to the old model but just a scaled-up version. Measurements are roughly the same as the 250/255 series leukus.

Marttiini Ranger (Old)

Marttiini Ranger knives were and still are marketed as the next generation Leuku knives. This first and small one is a pretty decent all-around knife and easily replaces your everyday carry/puukko knife.

Marttiini Silver Bowie

This one is similar to the Bowie Martef, but it has an uncoated blade and leather sheath. I bought mine from Marttiini factory outlet maybe ten years ago. As I hadn’t seen the model available anywhere in Finland I asked them what are these models and got an answer that they were likely models targeted […]

Marttiini Bowie Martef

Bowie Martef is a bit different thing than usual knives made by Marttiini. While sharing some of the basic parts there are two main differences: Blade shape: Bowie-inspired clip point blade, similar to Ka-bar shape but smaller Sheath: Quality Cordura / Nylon sheath with rope to tie to your hip. The handle is a rubber […]

Kizlyar T-1

T-1 is a very well-made bushcraft-style knife, maybe even a bit of Kephart style there. Robust construction with a thick blade and sturdy leather sheath make this one a good choice. I was particularly impressed with the quality of work they have put in here. Mirror polished blade is very nice and it has just […]

Marttiini MFT G10

Initially, I was very excited about this knife. Price is really cheap for a full-tang knife with G10 handles and quality sheath. The knife is robust but there are two important buts. The first one is the balance. Due to the shape of the handle and full-tang construction knife is heavily balanced to the handle […]

Marttiini 2019 Kettu (Fox)

Collector’s item, the year 2019 edition. Fox knife was a must-have knife as soon as I spotted it in a shop. While sharing some of the classic Ilves/Lynx design it still has few things I hadn’t seen in a Marttiini knife before. Handle The handle is one of the first things you’ll spot and it […]

Marttiini Suomi-Finland

Marttiini Kotka (Eagle Knife)

First one in Marttiini special knives selection. Still one of their most popular collector knives.

Marttiini Take (Full Tang)

Mora Bushcraft Forest

Buck 110 Folding Hunter

Buck’s Folding Hunter was created in 1963. Al Buck decided that a revolutionary locking blade knife was needed by outdoorsmen who wanted a sturdy knife but did not want to carry a long, fixed blade knife. He was right and the result proved to be the key to the company’s future. The challenge was to […]

Iisakki Järvenpää Jahtipartio (Big Scout)

Iisakki Järvenpää Partiopuukko (Scout Knife)

Mora 2000 – 2021 Anniversary Edition

From Mora website: The Morakniv 130-year Anniversary also marks the 30-year jubilee of the legendary Mora 2000. This characteristic new knife is a true collector’s item. When the knife was launched back in 1991, it was given the futuristic name Mora 2000. Thirty years have now passed and the Anniversary Edition is a tribute to […]

Ka-Bar USMC Fighting Knife

An American knife manufacturer Ka-Bar is probably most well known for their fighting knife. This legendary bowie-inspired knife is sort of the tactical knife everyone knows by the look.
